Description

The story of rhino poaching is evolving – and extremely human, says US-based rhino conservation specialist Katie Lawton. The sense of enormity when staring extinction right in the eye is difficult to comprehend,” she reflects on that 2013 encounter. As they acknowledge elsewhere, it would be more like a “cold-resistant elephant with all the core biological traits of the woolly mammoths” who coexisted with early humans. So Hildebrandt and colleagues, coordinated by Stejskal, stepped up efforts to collect eggs and sperm.

He struggled, at first, to stand back up — his caretakers crouched and heaved, trying to help — but his legs were too weak. Armed conflict across Central Africa in the 1970s and early 1980s wiped out most of the remaining northern white rhinos except for a small population in Garamba National Park in DRC. Stejskal acknowledges that it is quite possible none of the methods being developed can save the embattled rhinos. When she is not off on scientific expeditions, Nicola Davies lives in a cottage in Somerset, England, where she is lucky enough to have pipistrelle bats nesting in her roof. We then see her twice at night with her father looking across at the solitary figure and then we find her alone too in her apartment overlooking the zoo: plotting and preparing.

Last is based on the true story of a Northern White Rhino named Sudan who was placed into a zoo in the Czech Republic in 1975 at aged two. We see that his world goes from fields of grass and flowers and inky skies filled with stars to a concrete enclosure with no smells or comfort at all. For 80 years, the uncontrolled hunting of the White rhino saw it wiped out of country after country, until all that existed were between 20 and 100 animals in the territory of Zululand- now known as the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. Repeatedly, our coverage of Sudan seemed to create a buzz, garnering interest from mainstream media and conservation circles. Being in Sudan's presence always felt for me like a visit with a sage; his demeanour, despite his behemoth self, had a way of conveying a calm patience with me and though his minders would always be hovering just outside my camera's frame, he [Sudan] was accepting of my wary intrusions and poised as though he was aware of his symbolism as the last icon of his subspecies.Last: The Story of a White Rhino is inspired by the true story of Sudan, the last Northern White Rhino in Africa.
