In the last Sebring 12 Hour race to utilise the old airport circuit, the Coca Cola Porsche 962 of Bob Akin, Hans Stuck and Jo Gartner waged a ferocious battle with the Lowenbrau Porsche of Al Holbert, Derek Bell and Al Unser Jnr, until a turbo failure on the Lowenbrau car dropped it to third place. The winning car set new speed and distance records covering 1394.82 miles at an average of 115.852 mph.
